Silver Surfer Custom Sails
| John Blackwell our sail designer started making windsurfing sails in 1985 and by the peak of the sport in the late 80's was making over 100 sails every week. In recent years we have mostly made sails for our own use, but now offer a highly personalised custom sail service. |

We do not have a standard range; the sails we make are orientated towards a specific use. We do not make concessions towards brand image or marketing demands. Although we have lower overhead costs than the large lofts our material costs are far higher because we are not buying in the great bulk of the main lofts. Our prices are therefore similar to the main sail brands.

You may well ask "who would want a custom sail when the standard of production sails is high?" An example of where our sails come into their own would be a very, very strong wave sail made out of pentex materials. Surely the main brands use material just as strong? not necessarily purely because of cost. Another example where you may choose a custom sail are if you want a specific style of sail that the main brands do not cater for such as a 2.5 meter wave sail or a quiver of custom speed sails. |
We do not have the "our sails are best" attitude, what we do have is the ability to offer a service that no one else does. The large international lofts are able to put a lot of research and development into their products, and they make good sails. But their products have to be aimed at a large number of sailors of differing abilities and used in a wide range of conditions. Our sails are made for a specific windsurfer's style and for the conditions in which he or she sails, to help maximise the enjoyment of this most fabulous water sport.
